Wings of Wonder Event at Rapid City Regional Airport Supports Accessible travel

Rapid City Regional Airport hosts Wings of Wonder an accessible, educational event.

Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP) hosted Wings of Wonder on May 7, 2025 at 12:00 PM, a free, guided airport tour designed for individuals with accessibility needs and their families. The event provided a low-stress preview of the airport travel experience, helping participants build confidence and comfort ahead of a future flight.

Attendees walked through key steps in the travel journey, including check-in, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screening, and the gate area, with airport staff offering personalized guidance in a calm, supportive environment. The tour was built for individuals with autism or other sensory processing differences, along with first-time travelers who benefit from extra preparation.

“Air travel should be inclusive for all, we’re proud to be a pioneer in accessibility in the Dakotas and to work alongside community partners to provide meaningful experiences that empower every traveler.”

Patrick Dame, Executive Director of Rapid City Regional Airport

Alongside the airport team, local organizations were onsite with resources and support. Representatives from Wondermakers Travel, a South Dakota-based accessible travel agency, answered questions and shared trip-planning guidance. Attendees also met the airport’s therapy dogs, and the tour wrapped with an optional bus ride around the airfield for a behind-the-scenes look at airport operations. Additional agencies included Watiki and LIV Hospitality, The Rapid City Rush Hockey Team, and the City of Rapid City Disability and Accessibility Committee.
